Our top 3 picks for boxed Mac & Cheese

For too long has box macaroni and cheese been unfairly judged, relegated to late-night cravings and just feeling a little bad about eating it. But it’s only a few bucks, sometimes under $1, comforting, and it still hits. But not all boxes are created equal.

So, in the name of highly distinguished taste-testing, we present: the official Functioning Human ranking of top-tier boxed mac and cheese.

1. Kraft Thick ‘n Creamy

Seriously Kraft has so many flavors we’re not sure how they’re all different, but Thick ‘n Creamy has a certain je ne sais quoi that really sets it apart. It's a little extra indulgent and lives up to the name. 

Pro tip: If you’re not a milk drinker, just leave a bit of pasta water in the pan after draining. Then stir in the butter and cheese powder for peak creamy results. Chef’s kiss.

2. Guinness Caramelized Onion with Cabot

This one caught us off guard in the best way. The flavor is rich, a little grown-up, and comes with a squeezable cheese packet (no powder here). It’s noticeably different from your average box, with a unique pasta shape, as well.

Only complaint: It’s a true single-serving box. Give us more, please.

3. Annie’s Shells and White Cheddar

A slightly classier take on the classic, with pasta that feels less mushy and more, well, yummy. The cheese flavor is solid, and unlike some shells, these don’t clump together into a single pasta blob.

We haven’t tried the whole Annie’s lineup (yet), but this one impressed.

Honorable Mentions

• Stouffers (the frozen kind). Technically not a box, so we can’t let it compete officially. But if you’re browsing the frozen aisle, the Ultimate Five Cheese version is a comfort food sleeper hit (we're pretty sure it's what they serve at Popeye's.) Worth the microwave wait.
