I'll go first! I used to think "work hard, people will notice, and the opportunities will come to me." But in reality, everyone is pretty wrapped up in their own stuff. I was interested in digging more into data stuff at work, but I didn't get the chance until I finally asked to do it and explained why it would be helpful. And that was a good skill I used later.
